What is a Greenhouse? Let’s ask Wikipedia!
A greenhouse is a structure that allows people to regulate climatic conditions, such as temperature and humidity. There are many different designs of greenhouses. But, in general these buildings include large areas of transparent material to capture the light and heat of the sun.
Lean-to Greenhouses: Attached to an existing structure, such as a house or garage, these greenhouses share a wall with the building, making use of its support and often providing convenient access.
Freestanding Greenhouses: Independent structures not attached to any other building. They offer flexibility in terms of design, size, and placement within the garden.
Gable Greenhouses: Characterized by a traditional peaked roof that forms a triangular shape, providing good height and efficient rain and snow runoff.
Hoop or Tunnel Greenhouses: Utilize a series of hoops covered with greenhouse plastic or polyethylene to form a tunnel-like structure. They are cost-effective and easy to assemble.
A-Frame Greenhouses: Resemble the letter “A” in shape, providing a peaked roof for efficient snow and rain runoff. They can be freestanding or lean-to structures.
Dome Greenhouses: Geodesic dome-shaped structures that offer excellent strength and stability. They provide efficient air circulation and light distribution.
Sawtooth Greenhouses: Characterized by a series of ridges and slopes resembling the teeth of a saw. This design enhances natural ventilation and light distribution.
Shade Houses: Partially or fully covered structures designed to provide shade for delicate plants or seedlings, protecting them from excessive sunlight.
Cold Frames: Low-profile, unheated structures with a transparent cover, usually used to protect plants from harsh weather and extend the growing season.
Each type of greenhouse has its own advantages and is suited to specific gardening goals, climate conditions, and available space.
