Home & Garden for inspiring DIYers
Let’s start with the types of pergola’s we have, before we go any further on tips, advice, how to DIY, etc.
Freestanding pergola
Is exactly what it says: a pergola that stands alone as a landscape element detached from your home.
Attached pergola
Where one side of the pergola is attached directly to the side of the home’s wall. Usually applied to cover a space connected to your house, like a deck or patio.
Awning pergola
typically small in size, awning style pergolas stand right onto the wall and don’t require columns or posts for support.
Louvered pergola
Has movable louvers as rafters. You can open and close the louvers to allow more or less sunlight as required or may even provide shelter against the elements (rain/snow). There are manual and automatic models of louvered pergolas.
Arched pergola
Most pergolas will have a flat or slanted roof, but you can find numerous designs with arched tops. An arched pergola may appears more romantic than a flat one and gives your space a more unique and elegant look.
