Choosing the Right Plants

How to choose the right plants in your garden? That is indeed a very important question, when creating or redesigning your garden. There are many variables that should lead to your decisions. Think about the following when Choosing the Right Plants:

  • Environment – Size of the Garden, Soil type, along with climate, they set the foundation of what you can and cannot do.
  • Maintenance – how much maintenance do you like to spend on the plants? Are you having a green thumb and like to spend a lot of time grooming and nurturing your beloved plants? Or you just want to enjoy them?
  • Plant size – take into consideration the size of the plants once they are mature. Also consider the need or possibility for grooming.
  • Amount of Sun – Will they be in a very sunny or in the shadow? Are there natural shadow or sunny places, e.g. because of the placement of the house? Or would you intentionally like to create show or sunny spots?
  • Flowering time – Are they spring, summer or autumn or all season plants? Consider the entire gardening season, how you like the garden to look.
  • Resistance to disease and parasites – some areas are more prone to certain parasites or animals, but also the plants of your neighbor will impact, just as the selection/combination of plants you choose may naturally repel or attract certain insects.

Another very good rule of thumb, especially for beginners, is to check your local garden shops and talk with them based on the learnings of this site. If any of your local garden shops does not sell certain plants you would like to have, it most like means that they don’t suit in the climate you are living in.
