Besides the normal planning and design of the pond, there are a couple of factors that often are either forgotten or skipped when doing a DIY pond. By now you have watched all the videos, you have your plan ready, and I am sure a great design and vision of your pond. There are a couple of point that you may consider when reviewing the plans.

1

Ensure the location where you want to place the pond is level. Remember you can only fill the pond as high as the lowest edge of the pond. Therefore best results is to ensure that the entire area of the pond (all edges surrounding the pond) are level.

2

Decide the depth of the Pond. Will it be Shallow or Deep? Deep ponds are typically better for fish, while shallow ponds are excellent for decorative purposes. However, shallow ponds have the tendency to faster gather algae.

3

Protect the bottom from pests. If your area has moles or other Burrowing animals, make sure the is enough protection such as a metal mesh.

4

Facilitate a spillover drain – if you live in an area which can be subjected to heavy rain, you may need to prepare the pond will flow over and you better do that in a controlled manor to avoid you pond and surrounding to be destroyed.

5

Avoid vertical walls or edges. Especially when constructed from natural stone. Cost for building and maintenance will be significantly higher. So unless you have a deliberate intend in the design incorporated, you may want to think twice.

6

Install a Permanent Water Filter system. You can also opt for a floating filtration system, but that doesn’t look nice and take a lot of pond surface. In any case, you must have a filtration system is you intend to have fish in the point. If you want only plants, you may not need it.
